Fiber to the Cabinet (FTTC)
What was FTTC?
Fibre to the Cabinet (FTTC) was one of the UK’s most widely available broadband solutions, offering a blend of fibre-optic and traditional copper technology. With FTTC, fibre cables run from the exchange to your local street cabinet, and then copper cables carry the connection the rest of the way to your premises. At Vibe Active, we offered FTTC packages that offer download speeds of up to 80Mbps, a dependable and cost-effective option for homes and small businesses that need stable, everyday internet for streaming, working from home, or light commercial use. This product has now been replaced with SoGEA Broadband.
A Smart Step Up from ADSL
FTTC was a great step forward for anyone upgrading from older ADSL connections, providing faster speeds and better reliability without the higher costs of full fibre or leased lines. It’s was especially useful in areas where full FTTP coverage was not yet available.
The Gradual Phase-Out of FTTC in the UK
Fibre to the Cabinet (FTTC) was long the staple of UK broadband, but it’s now being gradually phased out as the country moves towards a full-fibre future. Openreach has implemented a “stop sell” policy in areas where Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) is widely available, meaning new FTTC services are no longer offered in those regions. This transition is part of a broader initiative to retire the ageing copper network, with the complete switch-off of the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) scheduled for January 2027. While existing FTTC connections will continue to function for now, customers are encouraged to upgrade to more reliable and faster full-fibre solutions like FTTP or SoGEA. At Vibe Active, we’re here to help you navigate this change and ensure a seamless transition to next-generation connectivity.
